La période est dominée par l’attaque surprise de l’Union soviétique par l’Allemagne nazie et ses alliés le 22 juin 1941. L’offensive foudroyante des armées hitlériennes s’accompagnent de pogroms massifs, souvent perpétrés avec l’aide de la population locale, en particulier dans les pays baltes.

S’il ne fallait choisir qu’une seule chanson de celles présentées dans cette compilation qui couvre la production phonographique de quelques musiques créoles américaines entre mai et début juillet 1941, je choisirais sans hésiter Chocolate Shake, par l’orchestre de Duke Ellington, une tuerie faite pour le dancefloor. Juste derrière, je placerais les quatre morceaux proposés par l’orchestre du Théâtre national de la Havane où flamboie le prodigieux percussionniste d’ascendance africaine Chano Pozo. Si en avril 1941 les Britanniques parviennent à chasser les Italiens d’Érythrée et d’Éthiopie et rendent son royaume au Négus Hailé Sélassié, une victoire quai a un écho retentissant parmi les communautés noires d’Amérique, ils doivent évacuer la Grèce à la fin du mois, tandis que l’Allemagne, l’Italie, la Hongrie et la Bulgarie se partagent la Yougoslavie, envahie en quinze jours par les troupes de l’Axe.

Trois mois (février-avril 1941) de musiques noires et créoles particulièrement propices à la danse sont représentés dans cette compilation, qui s’ouvre avec Take The A Train par l’orchestre de Duke Ellington, un coup de chapeau à la ligne A du métro new-yorkais. Celui-ci est suivi par un slow particulièrement prenant, Blue Serge. On écoute ensuite le génial guitariste Charlie Christian dans Solo Flight avec le grand orchestre de Benny Goodman. Le trompettiste Jonah Jones et le batteur Cozy Cole sont entendus à leur avantage dans Jonah Joins The Cab, de Cab Calloway, à la fantastique progression de la tension. La guerre-éclair est évoquée sur un ton à la fois humoristique et discrètement érotique par Una Mae Carlisle, avec la collaboration du saxophoniste Lester Young. Charlie Christian livre à nouveau un solo impeccable dans Good Enough To Keep, tandis que Billie Holiday propose sa vision de deux standards, Georgia On My Mind et All Of Me.
À Cuba, l’orchestre de Mariano Mercerón, composé de musiciens d’ascendance africaine, grave ses premiers disques pour le label Victor. Puis le bluesman Robert Petway enregistre la première version du fameux Catfish Blues. On retrouve ensuite le fabuleux conjunto d’Arsenio Rodríguez dans une puissante guaracha et une conga brûlante. Le rhythm’n’blues est représenté par Saxa-Woogie, un instrumental de Louis Jordan et Shotgun Blues de l’harmoniciste Sonny Boy Williamson.
On se déplace à Buenos Aires, où les Lecuona Cuban Boys sont en tournée pour écouter José Dolores, une conga d’Electo Rosell. Retour à New York pour découvrir une nouvelle version d’Ugly Woman, un calypso de Hubert Raphael Charles, alias The Lion. Lil Green chante Why Don’t You Do Right, une reprise de Weed Smoker’s Dream de Joe Mc Coy de 1937. L’émission se termine avec deux superbes morceaux de Jay McShann, Swingmatism, qui permet d’entendre le jeune saxophoniste alto Charlie Parker, et Hold ‘Em Hootie, un blues dans lequel le pianiste dialogue avec son batteur Gus Johnson.

La période est en effet favorable pour l’économie américaine, grâce à la guerre qui stimule les exportations et protège le marché intérieur. En automne 1940, Hitler renonce à l’invasion de la Grande-Bretagne, n’ayant pas réussi à dominer l’espace aérien, et décide d’attaquer l’Union soviétique au printemps 1941.

Cinq mois (septembre 1940 à janvier 1941) de production discographique de la part de musiciens presque tous afro-américains et afro-cubains sont couverts dans cette sélection. Dans le premier titre, de style néo-orléanais, le pianiste Earl Hines déstabilise ses compagnons par des audaces particulièrement savoureuses. Suivent quelques enregistrements remarquables réalisés à Cuba par des musiciens locaux, sauf le premier, œuvre du Cuarteto Caney, basé lui à New York. Le premier disque du conjunto d’Arsenio Rodríguez est un jalon important dans l‘évolution de la musique de l’île. Entièrement composé de personnes d’ascendance africaine, cet ensemble se distingue par son dynamisme extrême et la puissance inventive de ses solistes, le pianiste Lino Frías et le tresero Arsenio Rodríguez en particulier. Dans une France désormais soumise à l’occupant nazi, le guitariste manouche Django Reinhardt grave deux de ses plus belles créations, Blues et Nuages, tandis que dans une Amérique encore épargnée par la guerre, Duke Ellington et son orchestre alignent les chefs d’œuvre : Across The Track Blues, Chloe, That’s The Blues Old Man. La musique cubaine n’est d’ailleurs pas sans influencer le jazz de l’époque, comme en témoignent Harlem Rhumbain’ The Blues, de Joe Brown, et Cuban Boogie Woogie d’Andy Kirk, morceau dans lequel brille la pianiste Mary Lou Williams. On entendra également avec plaisir la dernière contribution, avant 1944, du saxophoniste Lester Young au sein de l’orchestre de Count Basie. Enfin, on saluera les novateurs que sont respectivement le saxophoniste alto Charlie Parker, qui s’exprime alors au sein de la formation du pianiste Jay McShann, et du guitariste Charlie Christian, vedette incontestée du sextette du clarinettiste Benny Goodman.
